Praying for their captor: April 14, 1945, five Japanese American monks pray for the deceased President FDR at the Minidoka concentration camp in Hunt, Idaho. They were imprisoned, along with 120,000 other legal residents and citizens, for more than 3 years due to FDR's Executive Order 9066.

The 5 are Gibun Kimura (Nishi), Yohaku Arakawa (Nichiren), Eiyu Terao (Nishi), Hojun Sugimoto (Nishi), and Gikan Nishinaga (Nishi)

Dec 28, 1932: funeral for bishop Yemyo Imamura, the 1st major American engaged Buddhist, at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin. Soto Zen, Nichiren, Shingon, Jodo Shu, Higashi Honganji, Shinto, and Christian reps all honoured Imamura.

He was a major player in labour negotiations for Japanese plantation workers, ordained the 1st female Buddhist minister in the USA, and oversaw the 1st American Buddhist prison and hospital chaplaincies.

Engaged Buddhism 100 years ago: the Fukugawa free medical clinic for the poor was founded by Kujo Takeko, daughter of Jodo Shinshu monshu Otani Myonyo, in the 1920s. It became Asoka Hospital, one of the 1st modern hospitals in Japan. Kujo was also the cofounder of the Buddhist Women's Association, the landmark Jodo Shinshu organization that pioneered Buddhist women's collective leadership in contemporary Japanese society

A milestone in Buddhist history: the announcement of the ordination of Dorothy Hunt, the first woman ordained as a Buddhist nun in the United States. The ordination was performed at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin by Jodo Shinshu bishop Yemyo Imamura on July 24, 1924.

The announcement is from the August 1924 issue of Kyōdan Jihō, the monthly newsletter of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii.

Berkeley Zen Center will hold a memorial celebration for Alan Senauke, one of the great engaged Buddhist leaders, on Sunday Aug 10, 10am-2pm. The venue is The Freight, in downtown Berkeley. Senauke passed away just before Christmas, as he was preparing to co-teach a graduate course on Engaged Buddhism at the Institute for Buddhist Studies.
