Today is Choekhor Duchen in the Tibetan #Buddhist calendar.

As the story goes, for weeks on end after his complete awakening and vanquishing of suffering the Buddha just stayed in the forest and enjoyed his realization. But the gods kept pestering him to teach the Dharma so others in this problematic realm might end their suffering as well.

Finally he was like “Oh, all right. Sigh. Since you asked.”

Tacoma Buddhist Temple deeply benefited in its early decades from the Puyallup Tribe's friendship. When white settlers prevented Japanese Buddhist immigrants from farming, the Puyallup provided opportunities to farm and thus survive. Similar situations happened with other temples in the region. The Tacoma temple has created a land acknowledgement and is building ties of gratitude with the Puyallup

In case it needs to be said: There are no such things as illegal immigrants in the Pure Land, because everyone is unconditionally welcomed and valued. While we foolish beings fall short of Amida Buddha's Great Compassion, the same spirit animates our Jodo Shinshu temples.
