Citizen: "Hi, I'm an ordinary citizen who believes in reducing their carbon footprint.

"That's why I recently went vegan. I've installed solar panels, an inverter, and batteries, and have switched to a green energy provider for my grid power. I now also drive an EV.

"They may be small contributions, but I'm playing my part."

Politician: "Hi, I'm a centrist politician. I acknowledge the global warming of our atmosphere and oceans from toxic fossil fuel pollution is a very serious policy challenge.

"And I'm committed to bringing in policies that fight global warming. Well, as long as it doesn't inconvenience any of our major corporate donors.

"That's why our government has set a 20 year target for emissions cuts (excluding agriculture, embodied emissions in products we import, and the pollution caused by our fossil fuel exports). And I'll be happily enjoying my taxpayer-funded pension when a future government fails to meet it.

"We won't nationalise and replace existing power plants.

"But we will offer targeted incentives or market-based mechanisms to encourage emissions cuts in a way that helps our donors maximise their profits.

"We hope you'll ignore those gas fields we just approved, or the coal mines we just approved, when you consider our environmental record."

Oil company CEO: "This may surprise you, but we're actually very aware of global warming.

"As some of the documents we've been forced to reveal in court show, we've been getting legal advice on this stuff since the 1950s.

"We're also very aware of the threat that global warming poses.

"To our business.

"Serious government action on global warming will mean we can no longer make massive profits selling toxic fossil fuels. And if you think the litigation against big tobacco is bad, just imagine if we had to cover all of our externalised costs!

"That's why we've funnelled billions of dollars to support climate denial. That's included funding The Heritage Foundation, which published Project 2025.

"Because ending American democracy and having ICE detain American citizens is a small price to pay for us continuing to profit off toxic fossil fuels."

TechBro: "Hey cool! There's an abandoned coal power plant, which used to power a whole city. Let's build a massive data centre next door and use it for crypto mining.

"What's that? The VCs are over crypto and now love sentence generation bots? Cool, we'll run those instead!

"By the way, hope you guys haven't noticed that "don't be evil" and "connecting people" are no longer our corporate mottos. But we still do move fast and break stuff, including global ecological systems and the climate."
