Does anyone have a recommendation for a good book/podcast/history of how #Buddhism and Ancient #Rome interacted? I was doing the Chrono today https://chrono.quest/ and one of the dates was the death of #Buddha which fell pretty early in the span of the Roman Republic, before #Alexander on the Greek side so; early! It never occurred to me that they had to have interacted since eventually Buddhist regions were the eastern border of the Roman empire.

I dug into Wiki and read that summary, #Strabo, the Pompeii Lakshmi ivory statuette and some stuff on the possible influence of Buddhism on the interaction between Rome and early Christians.

I'd like a more, I don't know, technical history of that interaction though, any thoughts?

Outrage is the currency of the right. It's justified and probably even necessary to feel outrage. But our ability to hold outrage from a bigger space of kindness, is the measure of effectiveness of our resistance. It's how you disempower the trolls.

I know it sounds inane. I never thought I'd say this. But in this world, walking around with an open heart, and smiling at strangers, are acts of subversion.

That doesn't mean being a pushover. It means protecting softness, confronting evil, yet trying to not harden while doing so. And to have compassion for all the moments in which we try, yet fail to do so.

The alternative is: feeding the flames of rage. And get burnt doing so.

Another one I did! A short essay by Ichikawa Hakugen on the status of Intellectuals in Zen and Socialist organizing more broadly. He was a Rinzai priest and philosophy professor who survived WWII era repression and wrote feverishly until his death in 1986, castigating fascist Buddhism and the old Imperial system, among other things.

First one I completed a while back. Prison writings of one Uchiyama Gudo. Soto Zen priest and active anarchist organizer around during the Meiji Period. He distributed food from the temple he ran, ran an underground printing press and encouraged peasant unionism and taught children how to read. He was imprisoned and later executed by the government for his radical views.

The wildfire is now one block from the Pasadena Buddhist Temple. The temple survived an arson attack in 2023 that destroyed its Pride flag. A wildfire in Laihaina in 2023 destroyed three Buddhist temples, including the Lahaina Hongwanji Mission, in the same lineage as the Pasadena temple.
